Message: :) I know how you feel. I will go anywhere they are paying right now. My office is in Indianapolis, but I will go anywhere that makes sense in the midwest. Business has been good for us. We are staying busy.

Message: This thread has been amusing at least, but I can not believe there are no independant techs in Iowa. I should have called the thread free money and then I would get a better response :)

Message: In Vietnam I had two guys in my squad from Iowa. We all thought it was really cool because we figured there was just about nobody in Iowa. We just had a 40-year reunion and they were both there except one of them had moved to Wyoming, probably cutting the population of former infantrymen by half.
On a car trip to Alaska in 1994, we stopped at a supermarket in Iowa and it was the coolest place I ever saw, except maybe New Orleans and NYC. The supermarket was so big you could drive a semi down the aisles. They had everything you could possibly want. I guess because people have to drive so far. When I ran for school board I discovered (in 1995) that Iowa had the highest SAT scores in the country but also had the lowest number and lowest percentage of people taking them (about 5%).
So, after all this, don't be surprised that there is a "dearth" of technicians in Iowa. I could call my one friend in Iowa but he is retired from the post office and probably won't take up repairing machines anytime soon. Like someone else said, its been fun.
Living in a really nice, countrified place away from the cities, the pollution, the crowds and the traffic is probably really nice. But the price you (your customer) pays is not having quick access to polluting, crowded, car-driving companies that service their equipment.
But Des Moines is a real city, so I guess it is still a bit of a surprise.
