Subject: It's Scammer Season?

I mainly do cash registers but today in my office I received one of "THOSE" calls. They wanted me to check the model of my copier (I guess to see if it changed overnite). I played along and when asked if I do the ordering said "yes". It seems toner for my Sharp Z-70 copier was going up from $469 cart. to $533 (oh no!). I then told them I should get two cartridges to really save some bucks and she allmost crawled through the phone with excitement. Everything went south from here. First, I asked who the company was and she stated "we have done business with you for years". Pressing a little harder she stated we are "Direct Dist.". I then asked for her phone number and to my amazement she ststed that I have asked too many questions and promptly hung up on me (how rude).

What is the deal here? Would she have sent the cartridges COD, I'm guessing yes. Is there any way to scam them? Mabey have them send the stuff (order alot!)UPS and refuse it? It seems petty but this is sickening. I did track the number they called me on(951-547-3960), but you guessed it...no listing. Can't we at least call them back and fart in the phone (sorry just venting)? Any thoughts? Dave

hey david-- hows it goin- hope all is well. i have got 2 e-mail scams in the last 2 days. what i do when they call me is i tell them, in a real excited voice, that they saved the day- my boss wants this huge copy/print job done and i forgot to order the toners for my machines, hold on please and i'll go get the model #'s you need, might even throw in a line about how happy everone will be that we got them in time for the discount, and then i put them on hold. they will hang up after a specified amount of time and call right back. then you act relieved that they called back-they have the discounted toner after all-- and tell them there are multiple machines and it will just be a minute till you have a complete list. usually they don't call back more than once but this much is for sure-- when they are on hold with you they are not calling your customers. when i worked for xerox they never had any luck even with their oversized legal dept. catching these bastards so about the best we can do with them is have some fun at their expense.and yes this is the season for toner phoners-- tuey

Tuey, I tried this tactic with a lending scammer (expressed extreme interest) and he held for 15-20 minutes(my personal best). He even called back and I "apologized" and made him wait again. Who says self-employment has no perks. Dave

What I have had my customers do if they have already recieved a toner shipment from scammers,(they usually don't ship COD because a big COD check sends up red flags). I tell them to put the toner aside and wait. When the bill comes in the mail for toner plus freight, put it with the toner and just wait. Soon they will get the call from the scammer trying to collect the bill. Now they get to unload on the scammer and let them know that they are on to their scam. If they would like their toner back, they are free to send out a call tag to get it. That way the scammers already paid the freight to ship it AND they get to pay the freight to get it back.
One customer told them that I cleud them in to the scam, and the jerk had the nerve to call me and threaten to sue me for slander or something because I called them a scam.
I told the guy "Yeah, lets do that. We'll go before a judge and you can tell your story and how much you were trying to charge, and the I'll tell my story about the retail price and lets see what happens." Needless to say I never heard from him again.
Hit em where it hurts, right in the checkbook

Give them a non existent model name, and say you need 20-carts!

It'll keep them going in circles for a while and keep you amused as well!

I basically do the same thing JimmyD except when I tell them to send a call tag to pick it back up we fill the box with TRASH and keep the toner. I make sure the customer refers them to me and I laugh at them and tell them we are keeping the toner and there is not a damn thing they can do about it. If they want to spend $400.00 to file a lawsuit in California for doing something that is illegal in Florida and won't hold up in court to get back $40.00 worth of toner go right ahead.

Tell 'em it's a 3M model 209; you need the pink intermediate film Type 657 and paper Type 658. The last of the 209s went away (thanks to God) in the late '70s.
Heck, I might begin answering the calls from mystery area codes!

you could send the toner back loose in the box....without the bottle/tube. After all they are getting their product back ;o)

Ooooo! I like that, but before dumping the toner in, be sure to put a light bead of hot-melt on all the flaps so it can't leak out (and possibly tip them off), and so that they need to yank on the flaps to get it open; WOOOSH!

Instant "black-face!" - {8^)

off topic a little. i back when had several boxes that i would leave on the porch for the ups man to pick up. after two were stolen, i filled a box with all the toner from recharging. taped it up real good. that stayed on the porch from time to time but was never "stolen". oh to bad. i always hopped that the bastard would be in his/her living room and open that bad boy up in a hurry. so, all that old toner can be hopefully used again at some point. kinda like the post about filling all your junk mail into their return envelopes and sending them back on their dime. maybe throw in a few large paper clips and staples to screw up the envelope openers.

Years ago I got a parking ticket for $3 stuck in my windshield wiper. It was a little postage-paid envelope and said to "insert cash or check", seal and mail. So I put in my $3..........

.....in pennies

Must have cost them about $5 or so in postage

comment from D.T.'s 300 pennies. my cousin was in old downtown Las Vegas a few months ago at one of the old casinos. he sat down to have lunch and picked up 3 of the 1 dollar Keno pads. he filled them out, handed them to the keno girl. he said "put it in after the current game" for 3 in a row. well to his amazement he started seeing more and more numbers that he had. he got excited. he realized that he thought he won 1500 dollars. the girl was acting strange and taking forever with the manager. he asked what was happening and they informed him he won 4000. so he waited and waited. he asked when he would get his money. they told him that they didn't have the 4000 and that "this has NEVER happened". he did finally get the money. he said next time he went there a week or so later, the keno signs were all gone. when he asked, they informed him that "we no longer have keno". damn casinos!
