Message: Just fishing for ideas. What do you do for service area range. I've been using a 25 mile circle and out side of that we charge and extra $20 for trip charge. Want to know what others are doing, or their thoughts.
TIA

Message: The idea of a "Trip Charge" I always thought of as a bit old-school. I have lost many customers because of mention of a trip charge - I can undestand recouping the cost of fuel, etc, however before I was in the industry, the "trip charge" really turned me off to a company, even moreso with so much competition out there. I think the radius model may be a bit dated, and we always made zones outside of city limits for trip charges. How many of y'all have eliminated them entirely and have added it into the service bill?

Message: over 6 to 8 miles, depending of area, traffic in that direction, i start adding a travel charge. one is part way along ocean so 13 miles only 15 dollars. in mid city 8 to 11 miles 35 dollars, over 11 to 14 miles, 45 dollars and over 19 miles 60 dollars. i have to not only take a risk traveling, lost time that could be 30 to 60 minutes in worse case each way, and if i have to go back on warranty, i have to eat it. if its not worth it for them, not for me either. if i spend 4 hours traveling in a day and don't charge i am screwed. if i raise all hourly rates, than the close calls i will loose and keep the far ones which is counter productive for me. each person has to weigh their own unique circumstances. Message: I hear a lot of customers asking what is your Service Call Fee. We still charge a fee of $20.00 for traveling over 20 miles but we are in a fairly rural area. Over 40 miles gets $40.00 to $50.00 billled. We also knock $20.00 off our hourly rate for in house service work. A lot of customers are willing to drop off to save a buck in these times. A lot of the big guys charge their hourly rate while traveling to a service call so adding a trip fee is only fair!
