Message: Fifty years is a long time to just being alive let alone performing the same job. What I liked best was the independence and the challenge to learn something new, copiers were never boring. And dealing with customers and other technicians was for the most part a very rewarding experience. But, nothing is forever and so now I have the challenge of my golf game and the living with retirement. I wish you all well.
Good Luck,
Old Tech

Message: i think fondly of my dumping the daily routine also. 50 years is a long time. i have 31. give me another 7.5 and i hope to get out. but no retirement account. so who knows. just get me some land away from homes ten feet apart and a nice big Marshall amp so i can plug my SG into it. then i wont have to piss anyone off. have a great retirement and enjoy it. do like DR COPY does and sell toners no service. that is easy and can do it from your cabin sippin single malt and smoking a nice stoggey. Message: Lost my last big account to Xerox, in February, when the national office told them they had to use Xerox. I am doing the same and just selling toners. However I wish my wife would retire I am getting tired of babysitting my 94 year old father in law. She wouldn't retire cause she did not want to stay home with him. I have been looking for part time work just to get out of the house. I am sorry I just can't handle watching sports and news 18 hours a day. I gotta do something.

Message: OLD TECH- Good for you to be able to do that! You have seen and serviced all since day 1 of copiers. Have a wonderful retirement.
TonerJockey- I have a 100 watt Marshall Half Stack and an SG to plug it into. Nice Combo! When everybody retires we will have to have get together and have a jam session! We could call ourselves The Fossiles.

OPEN A ROTH RETIREMENT ACCOUNT AND PUT IN WHAT YOU CAN EVERY YEAR AND INVEST IT IN STOCK MUTUAL FUNDS. IT ADDS UP. I LOST HALF OF EVERYTHING I OWNED IN DIVORCE, LOST 3 YEARS OF WORK WHEN MY EYES WENT BAD, AND STILL RETIRED AT 56.
IF I CAN DO IT, YOU CAN TOO.

Message: copyman, nice going. you too must piss off your neighbors. but what a rig to do it with. i went to worstbuy a while back to try a few things. they have a nice sound room and none of the people that work there know anything about playing it seems so you can go in there and waste some time till the customer gets to your next stop. no one tries to sell you anything, unlike guitar center. they had this marshall stack 100 watts, triple lead i think it was. just the head was ? like either 1600 or 2600. something crazy. but it sounded so good. i told my construction superintendent friend that plays bass that you could put that in a room that you had to ? remove all the sheetrock and it would do it for you in about 20 minutes. i had it on ? 1.5 and it was just amazing. lets all hope for retirement. with some money left (yea right). Message: Thank you all for the nice comments. Most all of my time has been spent on the Oregon coast and I could not ask for a better location. I have worked as both and indy and as employee but the best time was when I was on my own. The fact however is that, it was only possible to retire, as a result of working for someone else and that is to bad. This country prides it's self on independence though pursuing that course may not be the best idea.
Good Luck,
Old Tech

Message: I have been an indy for 24 years and no company would have paid me what I have earned on my own. I have been able to purchase and pay off my office building (worth $250,000.00) that I would not have been able to do working for someone else. What most techs don't understand when they get started is you MUST be a good salesman first. The salesman makes the $$$$. I am a tech, but I became a good salesman. One sale can make you as much or more as 10 service calls and those sales usually turn into service contracts. The trick to making money is doing it right. You are not going to get rich running service calls. I have been in this business for 28 years (24 as an indy) and I wish I could retire now or sell the business and do something else with my brother. I tell my son who starts college this month get a degree in something you can get a job with because you sure don't want to peddle copiers for a living.
Can I get an Amen!!
Good luck Old Tech on your retirement. You have earned it doing this.
