Subject: question for Mr Spock IP: Logged
Message: hi, you had given me some info on a Toshiba E281c a while back. i am now finally being asked if i would want to go back. the original main problem was background type streaks on color copies but not black. black looks good. is there two transfer belts or drums on this machine? and if so, they would obviously each have their own cleaning blade. you mentioned possibly developer or blade or blade clutch. before i commit to going back i was just wanting clarification as to why there would be streak at the top or side in color but not black. i think the blank copies were fine in color but cant quite remember if it was full color or black? thanks if you have any additional info. and thanks again for the help you already provided me with. have a nice day, Jim

Message: Image transfers from drum to transfer belt (one drum, one belt). When color is made each color is overlaid onto the belt one color at a time forming the finished image. Each time the images passes under the transfer belt cleaning blade. Once the image is transferred to the paper the blade makes contact with the belt and cleans it.
When black is processed, the image is transferred to the paper BEFORE it makes it around to the cleaning blade area. Therefore black images are not affected when any debris around the cleaning blade is coming into contact with latent images.
Most likely there is some debris up around the transfer belt cleaning blade that is streaking the images ... from what you described above.
I know you specifically asked Mr. Spock, but I also know he will confirm what I'm telling. He may also have something else to offer, but since he hasn't responded yet I thought I would.

Message: thanks for the clarification. interesting point. i think as in the for example the canon image runner c3200 the belt is long and flat. the drum units are all situated above it on a horizontal plane. and i think that all the images happen on that plane and transfer is made as the belt makes its turn. on the downside turn is the transfer belt cleaning blade and it cleans all the image at once. now i do remember the older color copiers that make a full revolution of the drum for each color. then after transfer, each time i think it gets cleaned. then the belt after transfer to the paper. what your saying does make sense. that would explain it. i was just curious as to this exact models particular situation. thanks for your advice and input. i do appreciate it. have a great "hump day" (Wednesday) Jim

Message: Yes to what The GREAT CHECKER has said. This is a one drum one belt system. The black unit raises and lowers against the drum. The colors rotate to a point when they are needed and the belt keeps going round til the image is made and transferred. Streaks in color only mode are usually made by the cleaning blade either not cammed out all the way or some debris setting against the blade or at the turn. The streak could also be the main drum cleaning blade IF it is black mode as well as color or if the paper in the tray is out of alignment.
