Subject: E Studio 3511C Blank Copies IP: Logged
Message: This copier occasionally makes almost blank copies intermittently during copying only. Printing never has this problem. Is this a lamp failure occurring? Perhaps a bad scanner cable?
Thanks

Message: When you say intermittent during copying, do you mean in a run of 20 copies one or two will be excessively light, or do you mean across several copy runs just one or two of those entire runs will be excessively light? There is a big difference because in the case of the first scenario it could not be the scanning since the page was scanned once and printed out 20 times.
Also important is to note whether it happens in color mode or black mode. If it only happens in black I might consider the black developer, if in color then the color developers. If in either case then perhaps the charger. No matter what you need to see where the components are at in their life cycle using the PM support mode.
From what little you say I would not rule out it being a process issue OR scanning issue since most print jobs are just a page or two and copy jobs are usually multiple pages. Still you need to narrow it down by isolating possibilities.
Generally speaking, light color is usually depleted color developer or mis-adjusted developer/drum gap. Light copies K is usually depleted K developer. Light copies both is usually dirty laser slit-glass (if copies only then dirty exposure lamp and mirrors).
Now me personally, if I was in your shoes I would perform a complete PM from the kits (minus the fuser perhaps) and while doing the PM check that everything is looking the way it should. Make all the correct adjustments after the PM and see what happens.
I don't know if this rambling response will do you much good since I cannot just say "Ah ha, that is the problem there" because there are just way too many possibilities for me to do that. Perhaps someone smarter than I (Mr. Spock) will chime in. He's pretty darn good at giving great advice with minimal information.

Message: Agree with Mr. Spock, but also check the K solenoid, well if is giving you an error code, do a full PM.

Message: WOW, Checker said a mouth full. I agree with the the fact that not enough diagnostic information was given.
However, I will say that from the information given I can bet money on the idea that the problem does not stem from the image formation process, so I would not replace the developers or do a PM.
If it never happens while the unit is processing data from the computer in the form of a printed materials that would go to say that the image building and processing process in working properly.
Your problem is in the scanning process.
Good luck.

Message: It only happens when making a copy run of single copies of a set of many. It is extremely washed out practically blank. Only happens on black. No error codes. You might get one or two out of fifty like this. Considering it never does it while printing black, kinda rules out image formation. If the scan lamp is failing somehow intermittently, those copies would be blank, no? They do very little color on this machine. I'm wondering if it might be a scanner cable failing.

Message: Forget the scaning cable....this is a pm problem...if you are not familiar with this machines, can be a problem because, there are several things that are difficult to explain in few words. sometimes is dirty optics, sometimes is developer run out, sometimes are dirty sensors, sometimes in black dev. clutch, sometimes is transfer belt, sometimes is just calibration...and so on. I think that the guys give you few good leads, but is all on you :))

Message: I'm going for the K solenoid. It's pretty common to problems even though I'm not getting an error code. Being that the image is actually there but completely washed out sounds like a K dv unit lift problem. I have several of these machines under long term rentals and they have been great. Mechanics almost always fail before electronics. Thanks for the input guys.

Message: From the additional information you provided I would say that you have a drive gear on the back of the developer unit itself, or maybe on the back of the copier, that is getting worn and is probably slipping. When it slips the mag roller is briefly stationary and you get the washed out image, when it catches everything is fine. I've had several do this and you can always hear the tell tale sound of a gear popping just before the washed out page is ejected.
I can't say with 100 percent certainty that's your problem, but while you have the developer out and while there is still developer material in it turn the drive gear by hand (or take the back plate off) and check it out.

Message: If the problem is on COPYING ONLY, how do the PM parts come into play?
It sounds like defective Scan PCB or, like the original poster said, possibly in the scan lamp cable...

Message: I've checked the gears on the DV unit, even exchanged it. Still occurring. I might be misled by the fact they print so little. This box has 587,000 total prints. I'm still trying to narrow it down to copy only. At this point I'm not positive, it's what they tell me. I'll post when I really find out. Thanks for all the ideas.
