I'm of the opinion that there should be fuser wands in the fuser and replaced periodically simply to protect the longevity of the fuser & to assist with image process. Lexmark has said felt wands should only be used if printing labels. I've been servicing printers & copiers for 30 years & feel that these wands are needed. I am looking for opinions to present to the boss.

Works fine without wands. Even have users printing labels without wands and have no problems. Only fuser we see failing prior to the end of the maint. period have been caused by something going through unit like a staple or paper clip but mostly by leaking drill and fill cart.

Sorry, but I have to agree with MLynch and DesertTech. If anything, I would have a slight preference for no felt wand. A few months ago, I worked on one of these machines where the felt came off the wand and was pulled inside the fuser; not pretty.
I am not sure what the wand should do. I see "stuff" on the wands when they get old but not sure if this is toner residu or just "bbq-ed wand". HP fusers don't have wands and they seem to work fine without one.

The wands are impregnated with a little silicon oil. This is a holdover from the copiers of the 80's that used oil wicks to keep the rollers clean. Mita was the first to figure out they work fine without oil. Lexmark has been slow to get away from that, especially since most users neglect to change them anyway. The new composite material in the rollers makes the wands even less necessary

A lot of toner remans come with the wick wants - they cause more problems than they are worth. They burn up and the stuff falls into the fuser. Users replace them and break the holder and plastic bits get in the fuser.

While we are at it, you can change a T630 fuser into a T640 fuser by swapping the little PCB that is on the fuser chassis. I love Lexmarks...so simple...two captive screws, a shelf the fuser lays on....such simple and easy to work on designs.

have had the feeling the wick caused more problems than prevent and I have some of these models well over 4,000,000 prints on them
