severe curling at exit tray causing jams,tried adj temp. of fuser in fuser mode, replaced trays w/ fresh paper, 97,000 clicks on this machine, conclusion needs a fuser , but any other things that I may have missed ?

The 2430s have the noisy fuser drive motors and drive gears. I think Liberty Parts did a writeup on these. Google "HP LaserJet 24xx Series: Gear Noise Solution" - i bet your gears are worn or the fuser bushings are.
